For tunnels in metropolitan areas, be aware of the benefits of a reduction in traffic which can happen on the surface, and capture them in the project scope.
The space for staying, walking and cycling along William Street between Sydney and Kings Cross was upgraded concurrently with the Cross‑City Tunnel project. Widened footpaths, dedicated space for cycling, improved furniture and lighting, and improved facilities for walking at intersections have generated a better connection between two vibrant areas a short distance apart.
