The Character and form theme explores whether a place is human-scaled and celebrates its distinct features. When the blocks, lots and connections which adjoin our transport network are designed at a human scale, not only do they encourage walking and active lifestyles, but they encourage interaction between people through varied and active frontages.
The identity of a place is perceived through its built form, landscape character, and the contributions of local people over time. Culture and histories, including Aboriginal culture and heritage, shape our everyday environments. The character of each place is different, and an authentic response to that character can contribute to the success of that place.
Projects can aim for improvement by considering whether an area is permeable for people walking and cycling. Further considerations include recognition of the character of the place and its community needs.
