Build in accessible three-phase power supply along the street, lighting, sewer, water, and waste infrastructure, and vehicle barriers (e.g. retractable bollards) that enable streets to be closed to vehicles more cheaply and easily on a recurrent basis.
Benefits
- Supports multifunctional street environments to enable vibrancy at all times of day and night
- Reduces cost and complexity for staging events and activations in streets
- Adds interest and increased quality of a public space, making the place more appealing for visitors
- Supports local businesses and communities to gather and spread out in streets
Considerations
- Temporary interventions may be installed as trials, allowing them to be evaluated before they later become permanent

Further information
More information on street activation infrastructure can be found on the Cities Revitalisation and Place web page. Additionally the Vibrant Streets Package is an investment to inject vibrancy into our streets and create thriving local spaces that support businesses, creative sectors, and the community, now and into the future.
Example
As part of several projects to improve Bathurst’s historic town square, a new shared access way was created to connect William Street to George Street. Council wanted to improve pedestrian comfort and safety by creating new shared zones and giving pedestrians greater priority. Removable bollards were provided in four locations allowing for full closure and partial street closures. New streetlights were installed to light up area. This enabled council to enhance and expand the use of the historic King’s Parade and create an expanded place for public events and celebrations, particularly for the annual Bathurst Winter Festival.
