Accommodate two-way bicycle and pedestrian movements along either a path or an off-road environment without distinguishing space for particular modes. Use where there is limited inherent conflict between walking and cycling numbers, or where an existing footpath is wide enough and an opportune section of shared path will fill a gap in existing cycle links.
Benefits
- Minimises conflict with motor vehicles and heavy vehicles
Considerations
- Suitable for areas where predicted walking and/or cycling volumes are sufficiently low that separate facilities are not justified
- Lower levels of service to both people walking and people cycling than a separated facility due to the potential for conflicts with pedestrians, which must be carefully managed

Example
The shared path beside Blackwall Dr, Broadwater connects the town with Broadwater Public School just north of town. It is an example of a low volume route where a shared path is appropriate. The path is appropriately set back from the road which is signposted at 50km/h.
