Match the carriageway width to place context and to establish safe use. Where there are low numbers of vehicles in an area of high place value, reduce the carriageway width in favour of space for walking, cycling and staying. In lower place areas, ensure lane width reflects the safe operating speed based on alignment and proximity to roadside hazards.
Benefits
- Assists in providing continuous to-from movement for walking and riding
- Slows private vehicles increasing safety in an area where different users mix
Considerations
- Where kerb lines are affected, there is likely to be an impact to drainage patterns

Examples
John Street, Singleton maintains two travel lanes and two parking lanes after an upgrade. However, the width of these has been reduced, which lowers speeds at which drivers feel comfortable travelling. The space has given over to increased space on footpaths, which benefits people accessing shops and services. The previous street environment can be seen here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/CNd8uG2RJvCbebRaA.
