Increase comfort, safety and connectivity for walking and cycling and improve environmental amenity for adjacent dwellings by creating treatments that prevent through movement for vehicles but allow it for pedestrians and cyclists. These treatments can be located either mid-block or at intersections.
Benefits
- Encourages walking and cycling by reducing vehicle movements
- Reduces noise and pollution for people living in the neighbourhood
- Redirects private vehicles to more appropriate corridors
Considerations
- Physical devices such as plantings, boulders or bollards enhance effectiveness against larger vehicles driving across kerb-only closures
- Avoid installing chicanes within the treatment because they inhibit the comfort and free movement of people walking and cycling and may create a hazard in poorly lit areas

Examples
Lawrence Street, Alexandria, has been retrofitted to permit cycling to continue through while restricting access for private vehicles. This is one of several similar interventions in the surrounding residential street network which collectively encourage walking and cycling and direct vehicular through-traffic to higher movement corridors nearby, improving the amenity of the street for people who live there.
