Reduce the effective distance people need to spend on carriageways when crossing roads or streets, increasing safety and amenity.
Benefits
- Reduces crossing distance for people walking and cycling
- Perceived reduction in lane width may lead to reduction in vehicle speeds
- Improved visibility between pedestrians and vehicles
- May allow for additional car parking spaces
Considerations
- Consider combining with additional treatments, such as pedestrian refuges or wombat crossings
- Impacts on pavement drainage must be considered
- Impacts on cyclists must be considered
- Street lighting must be adequate for visibility to build outs

Example
Inner West Council installed this kerb build out to reduce crossing distance and better manage compliance with parking regulations. Its length is equal to the cars parked rear-to-kerb spaces on the side street and its width enforces the no parking distance from the intersection to maintain safe sight lines for people turning into and out of the street. It is planted to increase green infrastructure and reduce storm water run off from street.
