Physically separate space for cyclists from both motor vehicle traffic and pedestrians, to provide a high-quality cycling link and increase safety for all users.
Benefits
- Minimises conflict and the risk of injury for all road users
- Improves the level of service for people cycling, maximising potential ridership
- Increases streetscape amenity
- Reduces delay, improves road safety (both at intersections and along road sections) and improves operations at intersections when compared to two-way bicycle paths
- Improves coherence, legibility and local access
Considerations
- To cater for expected growth in ridership and emerging forms of micromobility, bicycle paths should be designed with sufficient width and minimal horizontal deflections (i.e. straight alignment)
- A safe buffer between people cycling and parked cars should be established
