A strategic street for active and / or public transport mobility in a lively and high amenity place environment.
Devonshire Street, Surry Hills
This type of street has a strong public transport focus, and also caters to walking and cycling while restricting or excluding private vehicles.
Space allocation for public transport movement should be clear and distinct, either inherently (e.g. light rail tracks) or by adding surface marking such as paint and ‘Bus Lane’ text. Barriers between lanes or tracks and space for people should be avoided to encourage access on both sides of the street. Instead, the design should distinguish areas where vehicles will operate by characteristics such as surface finish and arrangement of street furniture to alert users to the change.
Any facility for freight and private vehicles should be restricted to those needing to access land use within the corridor itself, with through-movement discouraged.
