Destination high streets are characterised by their attractiveness as places for gathering and activity with low through movement. They support retail, civic and recreational land uses. They may be located near public transport corridors, however, dedicated public transport along the street itself is usually very limited.
Private passenger vehicle access to these areas has traditionally been available. However, there is growing recognition that the vibrancy and economic viability due to greater proportions of people staying or walking within these areas is more desirable and of greater value.
Any car parking should be time restricted and should eventually be removed altogether, as benefits from improved accessibility from other modes of transport, and improved public domain opportunities, outweigh the perceived or actual convenience that car parking provides. Access for last‑mile freight should still be possible on streets of this type, however, you may need to consider spatial or temporal restrictions to ensure this doesn’t conflict with the usability of the street at times of peak activity.
People should be encouraged to cycle to these areas, with bicycle parking provided at frequent intervals along the street and at important destinations.
